On the wall of the Grapperia Montanaro, a poster reads "La vita e troppo breve per mangiare e bere male" (translation: "Life is too short to eat and drink poorly"). This must be the mantra of Culture Discovery Vacations where indulgence in food and drink is the norm.

On our "The Allure of Barolo" adventure, we had the distinct privilege of working in the cantina kitchens of two vintners: the Marrone family, and the Marsaglia family. Wine was the portal to discovering the history of the Barolo region, the artistry of vintners, the poetry and beauty of the place. These families welcomed us, quite literally, with open arms into their family units and their culinary traditions. On parting, after a week of sitting at table with these inviting people, they told us that we are now family and so, must return. We could not have had more gracious hosts.

As if this experience were not extravagant enough, we dined at the Michelin star-rated restaurant in Castello Grinzane Cavour, a 13th century castle, where food preparation is raised to the level of fine art. On another evening, from the elegant table of Cascina Cucco, we watched the sun set over some of the oldest vines in the Barolo region (Serralunga) while sampling their exquisite, full-bodied wines and enjoying a fabulous meal. Ristorante Moda, in our home base of Monforte d'Alba, again offered unforgettable dining al fresco on the terrace of Palazzo Martinengo.

When we were not cooking, we were taking in market day in Alba. Or we were walking the 4 km trek of the Mangialonga Wine Walk from the village of La Morra through the vineyards of low-hanging, blue, Nebbiolo grapes. Or we were driving toward the Alps to taste Castelmagno cheeses and visit the breathtaking San Magno Sanctuary.

To travel with CDV is to feel an emotional connection with Italy, with your travelling companions, and with your incredible guides: Denise, Erika, Toni and Rocky, who generously attend to your every need. Thank you for another spectacular vacation.
